Z What is a patron saint? Patron saints are chosen as special protectors or guardians over areas of life. These areas can include occupations, illnesses, churches, countries, causes — anything that is important to us. The earliest records show that people and churches were named after apostles and martyrs as early as the fourth century. Recently, the popes have named patron saints but patrons can be chosen by other individuals or groups as well. Patron saints are often chosen today because an interest, talent, or event in their lives overlaps with the special area. Angels can also be named as patron saints. A patron saint can help us when we follow the example of that saint’s life and when we ask for that saint’s intercessory prayers to God. For example, Francis of Assisi loved nature and so he is patron of ecologists. Francis de Sales was a writer and so he is patron of journalists and writers.

Since it was my J-weekend, I just decided to edit my original plans and change it to visiting Josh because this was the last opportunity we had. Even though the peak fall color was the weekend before, we still got to see some beautiful colors on the ride up there. However, we hit a set back at the Mackinaw Bridge. Because of the high winds, the bridge traffic had been slowed and even stopped at one point. We waited two and a half hours to cross the bridge!
So by the time we got up North to where all the pretty colors were, it was night. We learned later that before we had crossed, a trucker had a heart-attack and collided with the side of the bridge. Perhaps that’s actually what took so long We were so thankful we took an extra stop before crossing. We arrived at Josh’s apartment at Michigan Tech at 1am. We got to meet Josh’s roommate, whose name also happens to be Eric. He was such a sweetheart.
We have full faith now that Josh is being taken care of very well while he is away. Josh was so excited to see us or maybe it was the two two-liters of Mountain Dew he had before we came that he kept us up until 4:

Egyptian Hieroglyphs are a logophonetic system of writing were used in three ways: In some cases, each Hieroglyphic symbol represented one, two or three of the 24 Egyptian language consonants as phonograms: It was this concept that the Hebrews borrowed from the Egyptians to create their first true phonographical alphabet in history.
In other cases a hieroglyph represented an entire word. A standard hieroglyph for the sun would be followed by a second determinative to indicate something about the sunlight itself. Likewise a determinative would follow the hieroglyph for the moon to indicate different phases of the moon. In this way determinatives were phonically silent but conveyed additional written information.
Other times determinatives were needed to differentiate the meaning between two or three words that were spelled the same way in consonants of the same sound.

Dipylon inscription Most specialists believe that the Phoenician alphabet was adopted for Greek during the early 8th century BC, perhaps in Euboea. Tradition recounts that a daughter of a certain Agamemnon, king of Aeolian Cyme , married a Phrygian king called Midas. Naveh for the 11th century BC, Stieglitz for the 14th century, Bernal for the 18th—13th century, some for the 9th, but none of these are widely accepted. Herodotus’ account[ edit ] According to legends recounted by Herodotus , the alphabet was first introduced to Greece by a Phoenician named Cadmus:
J is the tenth letter in the modern English alphabet and the ISO basic Latin alphabet. In the new Turkish alphabet each sound is represented by a single letter, sometimes with diacritical hooks. The classroom had an alphabet frieze that showed an animal for each letter.
They were, at the time, writing with a set of hieroglyphs that were used both as representations of the consonants of their language and as logographs a logograph or logogram is a letter, symbol, or sign used to represent an entire word. Over the next few centuries, this alphabet spread through the rest of the Middle East and into Europe. Almost all subsequent alphabets in the Western world have either descended from it, or been inspired by or adapted from one of its descendants.
The first people to extensively use the alphabet as it emerged from Egypt were the Phoenicians, who ruled a small empire of maritime city-states and colonies around the Mediterranean. The Greeks borrowed the Phoenician alphabet sometime in the 8th century BC or earlier, keeping the order and adapting it for use with their own language. For example, the Phoenician alphabet did not have letters representing vowel sounds, which were important in the Greek language and had to be added.
After they had worked out the finer points of their new alphabet, Greeks living on the Italian peninsula came in contact with a tribe known as the Latins. Sometime in the 5th century BC, the tribe adopted writing from the Greeks and another tribe called the Etruscans, choosing and mixing letters from the two alphabets as they needed. The Latins would expand in population, geographic size, and cultural influence over the centuries, creating a little empire called Rome.
As they conquered most of Europe, the Romans took their alphabet with them and spread it to new lands. Even when the empire contracted and fell, the Latin alphabet survived with the people of former Roman lands. The alphabet was adapted to some native languages and exerted influence on others — most notably for us, Old English, which gave rise to Middle English and the Modern English we use today. Simple as ABC For all the adaptations and mutations, the alphabet’s order of letters has been relatively stable.
In the s, archaeologists found a dozen stone tablets used in a school in Ugarit, a city in what is now Syria, that are from the fourteenth century BC and preserve two orders of the Ugaritic alphabet.

Greek diacritics In the polytonic orthography traditionally used for ancient Greek, the stressed vowel of each word carries one of three accent marks: These signs were originally designed to mark different forms of the phonological pitch accent in Ancient Greek. By the time their use became conventional and obligatory in Greek writing, in late antiquity, pitch accent was evolving into a single stress accent , and thus the three signs have not corresponded to a phonological distinction in actual speech ever since.
In addition to the accent marks, every word-initial vowel must carry either of two so-called “breathing marks”: In , a new, simplified orthography, known as “monotonic”, was adopted for official use in Modern Greek by the Greek state. It uses only a single accent mark, the acute also known in this context as tonos, i. The polytonic system is still conventionally used for writing Ancient Greek, while in some book printing and generally in the usage of conservative writers it can still also be found in use for Modern Greek.
Romanization of Greek There are many different methods of rendering Greek text or Greek names in the Latin script. The form in which classical Greek names are conventionally rendered in English goes back to the way Greek loanwords were incorporated into Latin in antiquity. For Modern Greek, there are multiple different transcription conventions. They differ widely, depending on their purpose, on how close they stay to the conventional letter correspondences of Ancient Greek-based transcription systems, and to what degree they attempt either an exact letter-by-letter transliteration or rather a phonetically based transcription.

No distinction is made in surviving runic inscriptions between long and short vowels, although such a distinction was certainly present phonologically in the spoken languages of the time. The term runes is used to distinguish these symbols from Latin and Greek letters. It is attested on a 6th-century Alamannic runestaff as runa and possibly as runo on the 4th-century Einang stone.

The Evolution of the Alphabet Brian E. Colless Writing is a sublime form of human expression and communication. As the ancient Mesopotamian scribes used to say: Writing originally involved manipulating a stylus to make meaningful marks on clay; subsequently it also meant using a chisel to incise characters on stone or metal; ultimately it included pushing a pen or brush into an inkwell and wielding it on parchment, papyrus, or paper and even silk, in Eastern Asia.
This is characteristically a male pursuit, though the ancient Egyptians had a goddess of writing, Seshat; and the Mesopotamian ruler of the underworld, Queen Ereshkigal, had a female scribe as her right hand person. In seeking to chart the course of the evolution of the alphabet, we must first address the fundamental question: Was the pen created for commercial or religious purposes?
Or even for legal or literary ends? Origins of Writing Apparently writing was invented five thousand years ago in ancient Sumer, in the towns of southern Mesopotamia, between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, near the Persian Gulf, that is, in ancient Iraq Walker, Uruk and Ur were two of its oldest cities, and both are known in the Bible as seats of civilization Genesis
