Student-Faculty Dating: It’s Not in the Rule Book
To address situations in which two persons have an apparently voluntary romantic or sexual relationship, but where a power differential exists because of their roles within the university, e. All faculty, staff, and students, Lawrence campus Campus: The University of Kansas has a tradition of commitment to providing an academic community environment that, without discrimination, fosters intellectual, professional and personal growth. Central to the preservation of this environment is the trust that should characterize all interactions among those working toward the common goal of the institution, namely, our students, faculty, unclassified staff, and university support staff.
This trust is put at risk when members of the University community engage in consenting romantic or sexual relationships that involve persons of unequal power, for example, administrator and faculty, faculty and student, supervisor and employee.
Further, they need to develop and enforce policies that forbid intimate relationships between current students and faculty members. These policies must apply equally to all faculty, to academic and non-academic administrators, and to trustees because all are to different degrees fiducially obligated to students.
Newsletter 2 Faculty-Student Relationships Universities offer a variety of settings that encourage meaningful teaching and learning relationships between faculty and students in classrooms, laboratories, studios, athletic facilities, and other areas. Many academic experiences also lead to faculty-student relationships such as advising, off-campus supervision, joint projects on research and artistry, and extra-curricular activities.
In these settings and experiences, faculty members are expected to assume the role of teacher, advisor, supervisor, mentor, and coach. Having a good relationship with your students can help students succeed academically and increase their overall satisfaction with the university experience. However, one such relationship, the consensual romantic relationship, often fails and can result in severe consequences for both the faculty member and the student.
Incidents of consensual romantic relationships between faculty members and students are not new to higher education and engaging in such relationships with students may seem acceptable to those involved. However, the ramifications of these relationships can be substantial. In consensual romantic relationships that might lead to sexual harassment charges, which some do, the faculty member often bears the weight of the charges.
Relationships in which one party is in a position to review the work, or influence the career of the other may provide grounds for complaint when that relationship appears to give undue access or advantage, restricts opportunities, or creates a hostile and unacceptable environment for others. Such relationships may, moreover, be less consensual than the individual whose position confers power believes.
The relationship is likely to be perceived in different ways by each of the parties to it, especially in retrospect. University faculty members assume a level of liability in their actions toward and conversations with students. Conversely, students who are in a consensual romantic relationship with a faculty member should not enroll in courses or participate in activities in which the faculty member is associated. Faculty-student consensual romantic relationships can lead to confusion, distrust, and anger; subtleties can get you into trouble.

I decided to organize these by discipline and to include both faculty and administrators.
I did, however, include Athletic Directors and people in similar administrative positions. Note that I left off of the list any cases involving accusations alone without investigation, resignation, admission, administrative action, legal activity, etc. Specifically, these are cases involving faculty and administrators engaging in sexual harassment, sexual assault, sexual misconduct, stalking, violations of dating policies, violations of campus pornography policies, and similar violations, and where: The year listed below refers to the year in which the sexual harassment occurred, in which it was publicized, there was a university or legal finding of fact, or there was an admission of fact by the accused.
Freedom of Information requests are resulting in the release of university investigative reports. I am listing these reports under the date of release to make it clear when these cases came to light.
